U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye today issued the following statement after the U.S. Army announced that it has completed its final environmental impact study, which included public hearings, that examined basing options for a Stryker Brigade:
“I am extremely pleased to learn that the U.S. Army, after a thorough examination, once again concluded that it would be best to base a rapidly deployable Stryker Brigade in Hawaii. This asset is critical to protecting the lives of our soldiers who must be able to adequately train prior to their deployment to faraway and dangerous lands. The selection of Hawaii further underscores the strategic importance of Hawaii in the volatile Asia-Pacific region.
“I am confident the Army carefully weighed all factors -- that our national security requires it, that environmental concerns can be sufficiently mitigated, and most importantly, that the safety of our soldiers demand it – in coming to its conclusion.”
