Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye stated: “I am pleased with the prompt action by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court today in approving Saltchuk’s purchase of the Aloha Airlines Cargo. This will allow Aeko Kula, Saltchuk’s newly formed subsidiary, to start inter-island cargo operations immediately.
“Saltchuk is committed to enter into new collective bargaining agreements with the unions, and states that they will hire from within the Aloha Airlines family. That was good enough for me. It was time to put the critical need of resuming a primary inter-island air cargo operation ahead of union or management demands, or investment interests outside Hawaii. Focusing on the greater good means saving 300 jobs and re-starting the cargo service, a lifeline between our islands.
“I thank Saltchuk for their commitment to organized labor which they are currently demonstrating on the waterfront with Young Brothers/Hawaii Tug & Barge. I have no doubt that they will expand their base of solid corporate citizenship in Hawaii.
“This has indeed been a difficult and emotional ride for the employees of Aloha Airlines, both union and management. I have supported this company from its inception. It breaks my heart to think that this business icon will be no more. But, out of the ashes will emerge new businesses which will serve Hawaii with pride and professionalism which will be Aloha Airlines’ enduring legacy to the people of Hawaii.”
