WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced today that Kauai’s Lihue Airport will receive a federal grant of $5.7 million for improvements to the terminal building.

“The funds will be used to install a new heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system within the terminal. The current system is at the end of its service life, and more people are using the terminal building,” Senator Inouye explained.

He also announced that another neighbor island airport – the Big Island’s Hilo International – will receive $189,000 to install a noise monitoring system.

“Six noise monitoring stations will be placed around the airport,” Senator Inouye said. “They will monitor aircraft noise levels, and the information gathered with be used to formulate noise mitigation plans – if needed – for neighborhoods close to the airport.”

The grants for both airports – which total nearly $6 million – will be distributed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Senator Inouye is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He is also Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
