FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In response to the recommendations made by the members of Governor Cayetano's economic revitalization task force, the four members of Hawaii's Congressional Delegation, Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Daniel K. Akaka and Representatives Neil Abercrombie and Patsy T. Mink issued the following statement.

"We wish to commend the Governor's economic revitalization task force for recognizing the significant value of the East-West Center to Hawaii and our nation, and for its willingness to step up to the plate should federal funds no longer be available. However, the Delegation remains committed to securing the necessary federal funds to carry on the important mission of the Center into the foreseeable future.

In light of the strong statement of support, we believe the State of Hawaii and the University of Hawaii should consider supporting the Center with supplementary funding today to bolster the important work that it does."
