FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced today the action by the U.S. House of Representatives approving S. 1505, a bill to provide technical amendments to the Museum and Library Services Act.

"The Native Hawaiian Library Project, administered by Alu Like, Inc., has provided library services to pre-school age children, elementary, junior high and high school students, as well as adults, since 1985 under the authority of the Library Services and Construction Act. When the Museum and Library Services Act was enacted into law last year, the authority for the on-going provision of library services to Native Hawaiians was omitted. With the passage of S. 1505, federal funding will once again support these important services that have enabled Native Hawaiian children to improve their reading skills and adults to improve their literacy rates and as a result, their employment opportunities," said Senator Inouye.
