WASHINGTON, D.C. -- On the U.S. Senate floor this evening, U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye held off an attempt by U.S. Senator Slade Gorton of Washington to keep the USS Missouri from coming to Hawaii. Gorton's amendment was defeated by a vote of 53 - 46. California Senators Boxer and Feinstein were also sponsors of the Gorton amendment.Senator Inouye stated, "I am pleased that the U.S. Senate made the right decision this evening. The USS Missouri belongs in Pearl Harbor, together with the USS Arizona. I am certain that the people of Hawaii will treat the gallant Missouri with the utmost respect and dignity she deserves when she pulls into port at Pearl Harbor."
