WASHINGTON, D.C. -- United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced that the Senate approved $177 million in projects for the military in Hawaii. These initiatives are included in the Fiscal Year 1998 Military Construction Appropriations Bill.

"These needed initiatives will serve the men and women of the armed services and provide employment for our skilled labor force at a most critical time," stated Senator Inouye.

Additionally, the Senate also approved a provision that will allow the City and County of Honolulu to enter into a 50-year, no-cost lease with the U.S. Navy for approximately 300 acres for a soccer complex. The City envisions providing an additional 24 fields for training, practice and tournament soccer play, to keep up with the growing popularity of soccer among all ages in Hawaii.

"This is an excellent example of a government partnership working to provide additional recreational opportunities for military and civilian children and families. I commend the Navy for its willingness to provide the land, and the City for its commitment to improve the parcel for the benefit of the community," Senator Inouye stated.

The measure will now face a joint House-Senate Conference and final Senate vote before its transmittal to the White House.
