WASHINGTON, D.C. -- United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye issued the following comments upon hearing of the passing of Arthur Rutledge:

"Art Rutledge was an extraordinary person. He was maligned and attacked by some, but hailed as a hero and leader by many.

"He was a labor leader from the old school who fought for every privilege and right that workers now enjoy.

"He will be missed. His candor and his wisdom will be missed.

"I join his many friends in extending my sympathies to his family."
