WASHINGTON, D.C. -- United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced that the Senate adopted an amendment calling upon the Secretary of Defense to submit, no later than December 1, 1998, a plan for the development of Ford Island as an innovative public-private partnership, as well as proposed legislation to carry out these initiatives. The plan would incorporate a development strategy using both appropriated federal funds and one or more public/private partnerships with a potential of between $550 - $650 million for military housing and active duty requirements, as well as a home for the USS MISSOURI, a Navy museum and promenade. The submission date of December 1, 1998 to the President and the House and Senate Defense Committees will allow Senator Inouye to pursue the legislation in early 1999. This amendment is included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1999.
"I am very pleased that my colleagues in the Senate recognized the importance of developing new and innovative ways of building communities and attractions of value to our military families and residents alike. The development of Ford Island is an exciting opportunity for the Navy, in partnership with Hawaii's businesses. We will certainly benefit from this initiative, allowing for new and exciting job opportunities, as well as a long-term future for the Navy at Pearl Harbor. This amendment is an important first step," stated Senator Inouye.
Upon approval by the full Senate, the amendment will face a joint House-Senate Conference and final House and Senate vote before its transmittal to the White House.
