WASHINGTON, D.C. -- United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced that the Senate, by a vot of 87 to 3, approved the House-Senate Conference containing $248.7 million in projects for the military in Hawaii, including $23.5 million for the Army to acquire the 8,214 acre Kahuku Training Area on the Island of Oahu. The land is presently owned by the Campbell Estate, which will dissolve in the year 2007."I am quite pleased that the Congress recognized the importance of the Kahuku Training Area by appropriating funds for this significant Army acquisition. The Kahuku Training Area is one of the few parcels of land remaining which is adequate to hold military training exercises. Losing the Kahuku Training Area would have had a significant impact on the training readiness of our troops and jeopardize their status in remaining in Hawaii," said Senator Inouye.
In addition, the House-Senate Conference approved $2.2 million for the final design of Saddle Road improvements at Pohakuloa training area on the Big Island.
