WASHINGTON, D.C. -- United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced that the Senate, by a vote of 96 to 2, approved the House-Senate Conference Report which includes Senator Inouye's amendment that would require the Secretary of Defense to assess the Secretary of the Navy's proposal for the development of Ford Island as an innovative public-private partnership, as well as proposed legislation to carry out these initiatives. The amendment is included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1999.The plan would incorporate a development strategy using both appropriated federal funds and one or more public-private partnerships with a potential of between $550-$650 million for military housing and active duty requirements, as well as a home for the USS MISSOURI and a Navy promenade.

The development of Ford Island is an exciting opportunity for the Navy, in partnership with Hawaii's businesses. This amendment is an important first step," stated Senator Inouye.
The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1999 will now be transmitted to the White House.
