KONA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT RECEIVES $1.5
MILLION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT

WASHINGTON-The Kona International Airport received $1.5 million to
conduct an environmental assessment for projects identified in the recently
completed airport master plan, U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced today.
The funds are available through a grant from the U.S. Department
of Transportation.
The money will be used to perform environmental assessments for
projects that are part of the recently approvedairport
master plan at Kona International Airport.
The studies are
required to ensure the identified projects meet the Federal Aviation
Administration's National Environmental Policy Act compliance responsibilities.
The Kona International Airport is slated for $745
million in renovations and improvements over the next two decades including the
addition of a hotel, conference center and international concourse.
“The Kona International
Airport is a critical hub for Hawaii County travelers and visitors looking to
explore the Big Island,” said Senator Inouye.“In order to complete these renovations in a timely manner and protect
our environment, accurate studies must occur.”
