HAWAII PROJECTS TO RECEIVE $6.3 MILLION FOR
FISHERIES MANAGEMENT AND RESEARCH

AUGUST 25, 2009

For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON –Hawaii will receive $6.3 million in federal funds for marine fisheries management, coral reef ecosystem research and other projects, Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced today.

Six programs will receive grants totaling $6,336,799 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“Our ocean is a precious place and understanding the underwater ecosystem and the aquatic wildlife that inhabits it expands not only our understanding of marine life but can teach us how our ecosystem and climate change,” said Senator Inouye.

Below is a list of the NOAA grant recipients:

The University of Hawaii/ Sea Level Center     $1,371,000
The University of Hawaii Sea Level Center (UHSLC) collects, processes, analyzes and distributes tide gauge data from around the world in support of climate and oceanographic research.

University of Hawaii/JIMAR Coastal Research Program     $1,300,000
This proposal is to continue the Sustaining Healthy Coastal Ecosystems project initiated during the July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002 fiscal year under the JIMAR Coastal Research Program.  Coral reef ecosystems around the globe are threatened by an increasing array of stressors, including over-exploitation, pollution (including marine debris), habitat destruction, invasive species, disease, coral bleaching and global climate change.

University of Hawaii/ Pelagic Fisheries Research Program     $1,220,406
The mission of the Pelagic Fisheries Research Program (PFRP) is to conduct scientific research in support of rational management policies for fisheries for tunas, swordfish, and other highly migratory species.  The PFRP is a research program within the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) at the
University of Hawaii.

University of Hawaii/ Protected Species Research Program     $1,197,375
This project proposes research on Pacific Islands area protected species populations biology, ecology, and anthropogenic influences.

The Oceanic Institute/ Hawaii Sustainable Fisheries     $730,518
Development Project
The project is designed to develop core technologies in egg production, live feeds and hatchery-based production of marine species of importance to Hawaii and the U.S. Further, through the use of native species and hatchery production as an alternative to wild collection, these technologies will assist the U.S. in its efforts to lead the world in developing technologies that are both economically and environmentally sustainable.

Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council     $517,500
Assessment & Management of Western Pacific Coral Reef Ecosystems and Habitat
The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council will conduct a number of activities: coral reef fisheries and ecosystem related monitoring and outreach and education.
