SENATOR INOUYE LAUDS KURIYAMA’S ASCENSION TO CEO OF ALEXANDER & BALDWIN INC.
OCTOBER 26, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON-Senator Daniel K. Inouye congratulated Stanley M. Kuriyama on being named Chief Executive Officer of Alexander & Baldwin Inc. while lauding the efforts of retiring chief executive W. Allen Doane.
“As the principal managers of the commercial cargo link between our islands, the Mainland and Asia, and as a major player in agribusiness and real estate, Alexander & Baldwin Inc. needs strategic, forward thinking and a steady hand in the management suite and Stan is all of that and more,” said Senator Inouye. “Stan has big shoes to fill. Under Allen’s command A&B more than tripled its real estate portfolio and became the only American shipping company with service from China to the U.S. His work helped push the company’s earnings from $25 million in 1998 to $130 million in 2008. Allen led the company through difficult times over the last 18 years and I commend him for his commitment to the viability of Hawaii Commercial and Sugar Company on Maui. I wish Allen the best as he begins his retirement and hope he continues to lend his insight and management skill to the company as a member of the board.”
Doane will retire at year’s end after 11 years as CEO.
Kuriyama also has been named to serve on the A&B board of directors, effective January 1, 2010.
Doane will continue to serve A&B as a director, and current Lead Independent Director Walter A. Dods, Jr. will become chairman of the A&B board, also effective January 1, 2010.
Alexander & Baldwin Inc. is headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii and is engaged in ocean transportation and logistics services through its subsidiaries, Matson Navigation Company, Inc., Matson Integrated Logistics, Inc. and Matson Global Distribution Services; in real estate through A&B Properties, Inc.; and in agribusiness through Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company and Kauai Coffee Company, Inc.
